Red Sox expected to target Eric Hosmer this offseason, per report

According to a report from FanRags’ Jon Heyman, the Red Sox are expected to target popular first-base free agent, Eric Hosmer

Well, here we go.  It hasn’t taken long for the Red Sox to start making moves this offseason. Within the last 24 hours, the Sox have hired Ron Roenicke as a bench coach, Tom Goodwin as the first base coach and outfield instructor, Carlos Febles as the third base coach and infield instructor, and Tony La Russa as the vice president and special assistant to the president of baseball operations.  According to a report from FanRag Sports Jon Heyman, the Red Sox might make another move here in the near future.

Jon Heyman stated that the Red Sox are expected to target Eric Hosmer this offseason.  This really isn’t a surprise to most Red Sox fans.  The Sox obviously need to add some power to the lineup this season.  Hosmer could maybe help the team with that.  He might not be the most powerful hitter, but would certainly be an upgrade for this team.

According to Heyman, he thinks Hosmer will be a nice fit for this team and work nicely at Fenway Park.  I agree with Heyman here.  Hosmer has had pretty solid numbers at Fenway Park in his career.  He has hit .354/.404./.485 in his career at Fenway.  When he has been with the Royals, Fenway Park is one of the best parks he has played at.  Hosmer is an opposite-field hitter, so he can use the Green Monster to his advantage.

Hosmer is projected to get paid big money this offseason.  He is just 28 years old and he is coming off a career year, so it’s safe to say he is expected to get paid a lot of money by a team.  I would love Hosmer in Boston, but I would rather spend money on J.D. Martinez or maybe another free agent. Yonder Alonso, Lucas Duda, and Carlos Santana are among some other first-baseman free agents this offseason. I just don’t want the Sox to overpay Hosmer and not be able to get anyone else.  If we can get Hosmer for a fair amount, then I say sign him, but if the asking price is too high, I say walk and find another guy. I am hoping Dave Dombrowski is thinking the same thing.
