Game 1 Recap: Red Sox fall to the Rays 6-4

Well, this sucks. This Red Sox loss hurts. With a 4-0 lead heading into the eighth, I thought we were safe. But, boy was I wrong. I’ll try to focus on the positives from today though and try to give you a good game recap without complaining about the loss.

It didn’t take long for this game to get exciting.  Mookie Betts almost went yard the first at-bat of the game, but Kevin Kiermaier tracked the ball down and made an outstanding leaping catch.

The scoring for the team started in the 2nd inning when Rafael Devers hit a grounder scoring Xander Bogaerts.  Eduardo Nunez then hit an inside-the-park home run scoring 2 runs. Devers then doubled in the 7th scoring a run.

Chris Sale had a tremendous outing today.  Sale went 6 innings striking out nine batters and only allowing one hit. He has great fastball command and was working his pitches really well.

Xander Bogaerts looked amazing today. I was really impressed. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a single. My prediction that he will have a monster season is looking pretty good so far…

I would have loved to see J.D. Martinez homer in his Red Sox debut but I guess he is just saving that for the home opener next week.

In the eighth inning was when this game turned into a disaster. Joe Kelly came in after the seventh to try to bring the Red Sox closer to a win. Instead, he gave up a hit and couldn’t find the strike zone. Carson Smith then came in with the bases loaded and couldn’t find the strike zone either and gave up a triple. The Rays ended up scoring 6 runs in the eighth to give them the lead.

And that was about it. The Sox couldn’t make a comeback in the ninth, so there is the first loss of the season. It looked like it was going to be a great day for Sox fans. But, we just couldn’t close it out. Hopefully tomorrow night will be a different story. First pitch tomorrow will be at 7:10 ET at Tropicana Field. David Price is scheduled to pitch so let’s hope he can start his season off right.

Final Score: Rays 6, Red Sox 4
