5/15 Pitcher vs Hitter Matchups – Game 2 vs Oakland

While a good portion of New England will be watching the Celtics play Lebron in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the Red Sox will be playing the 2nd game in their series against the Athletics. Oakland had come in to Boston on a down note, losing 5 of their last 6 games. They ran into Porcello who now, in back to back starts, has given up 5 earned runs. The offense battled back, but the solo jack given up by Carson Smith, ultimately stopped them from forcing extra innings.

Eduardo Rodriguez is coming off of his best start of the season. Because of a rain delay, he only went 5 innings. But in that time he silenced the Yankees bats, allowing only 1 hit, walking 3, and striking out 8 batters. The Red Sox bullpen blew his chance for a win, but luckily the offense battled back to win a game before leaving for Toronto. Last season vs the A’s in 2 starts, Rodriguez was 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA.

Daniel Mengden takes the ball for the A’s and has been pitching effectively since April 16. Four of his last 5 starts (including vs Sox), he has given up just 2 ER or less. This season Mengden has been real stingy, as batters do whatever they can to work the count. Season high for walks in a game is one. And three of his 8 starts, he hasn’t walked a single batter
