Game Recap: Awful loss in series finale against Rays

This was an ugly one.

There isn’t much that can be said about this awful game.  Pretty much everything about this loss sucked. Rick Porcello had a really bad outing, the defense was horrendous and the bats couldn’t ever get going.

The Red Sox dug themselves in a hole early in this game and couldn’t ever get out of it.  Rick Porcello struggled right from the beginning. The defense was really bad in this game, as well.  A few hits, a couple walks and some errors led to a two-run first inning for the Rays.

Porcello struggled the next inning too.  This time, it was more than two runs. Again, a few hits and a couple bad defensive plays resulted in a three-run inning.  The Rays only scored one more run the rest of the game which came in the fourth, but the five runs in the first two innings were too much for the Red Sox.

The offense was pretty much non-existent in this game.  They could never get anything going until it was too late. The team was able to get one run in the seventh after Eduardo Nunez led the inning off with a double.  Nunez was able to score after a wild throw from the Rays first baseman after a Rafael Devers ground out.

The bullpen made it through the last half of the game without allowing any more runs.  Brian Johnson, Hector Velazquez and Steven Wright all made appearances out of the bullpen in last night’s game.

The Red Sox bats were able to make things interesting in the ninth.  Mitch Moreland started the inning off with a solo shot to cut the Rays lead to four runs.  Nunez then singled and then scored on a Devers double. Unfortunately, that was all.

The Red Sox are set to start the weekend series at Fenway tonight.  Eduardo Rodriguez will make the start for the Red Sox.  First pitch is at 7:05 PM ET.
