6/2 Pitchers vs Hitters Matchups – Game 3 in Houston

DAVID PRICE VS. JUSTIN VERLANDER

This weekend has thus far not been a good wknd for the Sox. They have lost the first 2 in a pivotal series vs the Astros, Sale looking Pomeranz for 2nd straight start, Mookie on the DL… and Pedroia joins him on the DL. Not only does this make the Sox’s medical & training staff look bad (playing with depleted bench for a week), this also makes the DFA of Hanley Ramirez even more stinging. In Betts and Pedroia’s places, they are calling up 1B Sam Travis and reliever Bobby Poyner.

Alex Cora had noted the reasoning for Sam Travis was because they have lefty starters coming up in the next week. This season however he has hit just .246 off of southpaws.

David Price is on the mound for the Sox, and is starting the most important game of 2018 yet as he looks to help the Sox salvage a split in this series. He has been on an impressive run as of late in his last 4 starts.

4 starts (3-0, 2.51 ERA) — 25.1 innings, 17 hits, 7 ER, 2 HRs, 10 Walks, 27 Ks

Justin Verlander takes the ball for the Astros, and is currently having the best season for any starter this year. In 12 starts he confoundedly holds an ERA of 1.11, that is 10 ER in 81.1 innings. His WHIP is 0.71. And opponents are hitting just .153 off of him. Righties are having the most “success” with a .169 clip. He has had just one start of giving up more than 2 ER. And that actually came against the Orioles way back on April 3, giving up 4 Runs (3 ER) in a no decision that the Astros ended up winning anyway. This would be a big game for the Sox to put in the Win Column.
