After last night’s win, the Red Sox announced that Christian Vazquez is headed to the disabled list after fracturing his pinky finger. Vazquez left the game last night in the seventh inning. He hurt it sliding into second base on a steal attempt. Vazquez is headed back to Boston to get some tests done to see how long he will be out, but it doesn’t look good for the Red Sox catcher.

Sandy Leon will be doing the catching now and Swihart will back him up. It’s good that we have a backup catcher that has talent. Leon has played quite a bit this season and won’t lack experience.
On the other hand, Swihart hasn’t done a lot of catching this year, so we don’t know what to expect there. He could be a bit rusty. This could be a big opportunity for Blake Swihart. He could really prove that he belongs at the big league level if he performs well behind the plate.
We will have to wait to see what Vazquez’s timetable for his return will look like. I would assume that we will hear something within the next couple of days, but I expect Vazquez to be out for a significant amount of time.
