This is not the news the team wanted to hear.
In case you missed the news that was reported yesterday, Christian Vazquez will miss 6-8 weeks due to his finger that he injured in the series against Kansas City. The Red Sox catcher will need surgery on the finger and will need quite some time to recover from it.
Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez to have surgery tomorrow to insert a pin into his fractured finger. Is expected to be out 6-8 weeks. Alex Cora said he is comfortable with Sandy Leon and Blake Swihart.

Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez is having surgery and is expected to miss 6 to 8 weeks, Alex Cora just announced. Cora adds he is comfortable with Leon and Swihart. Will be interesting to see if Dombrowski gets catcher before July 31.

Like Ian Browne said, it will be interesting to see what the Red Sox do at the deadline. In my opinion, Sandy Leon is a pretty good catcher. The pitchers seem to love pitching to Leon and the numbers show it. The Red Sox starters have a lower ERA pitching to Leon.
Alex Cora can also use Blake Swihart. I do think the Vazquez injury changes the way Swihart is handled at the deadline. Before Vazquez’s injury, I would have said there was no chance Swihart was going to be on the team after the deadline. Now, I’m not sure.
The other option the Red Sox have is to acquire a catcher at the deadline. I don’t think this is very likely. I would probably rather have another reliever and an infielder than a catcher. But, who knows. It is going to be very interesting how this all plays out.
