8/24 Pitchers vs Hitters Matchups – Game 1 in Tampa Bay

While the Red Sox were mired in a short slump, they lost the first 2 games of the series. Those two games produced underwhelming starts by Porcello and Eovaldi (both were solid early on), and the offense squandered umpteen chances to take control of the game. The next two games saw the pitching dominate more, and the entire lineup busting out for a combined 17 Runs. Just a week away from September, the Sox’s lead over NY stands at 9.5 games and the magic number to clinch the division is at 26.

Hector Velazquez takes the mound for the Sox. His last time out was facing these Rays, taking the loss in an eventual 2-0 shutout. A solo HR was the only damage the Rays could do in 4 innings against Velazquez. How good and underrated has Velazquez been? In 36 games (5 starts), he has allowed 2 Runs or less in all of his appearances. Hence his current ERA of 2.74. He hasn’t pitched more than 4 innings since way back on April 14, so will have to see what Cora’s game plan is for today.

Diego Castillo takes the ball for the Rays, in another “start” that will most likely pan out as an inning or two. But it’s working for the Rays. They have a much better than expected record of 67-61….. That is the same record as the Los Angeles Dodgers!!! This is most definitely a team that will pride itself on playing the role of spoiler. They could potentially finish the season with 85+ Wins, a quite respectful mark.
