Red Sox call up Brandon Phillips, activate Rafael Devers

Both infielders will join the team today.

With the minor league season ending on Monday, the Red Sox decided to call up Phillips to add some depth to their roster.  Rafael Devers will also be joining the team off the DL.

It sounds like the Red Sox are promoting Brandon Phillips as a type of reward.  They seem surprised that he stuck it out in the minors.  I am also surprised that he stayed.  I really thought that Phillips would leave after the Red Sox acquired Ian Kinsler.  Surprisingly, the veteran second baseman stuck it out and played pretty well in the minors.

It is interesting to note that the veteran will be playoff eligible, as he existed on the 40 man roster before the September 1st deadline. He will also wear the number zero – a first in Red Sox history.

Rafael Devers will also be with the team today.  Devers has been on the DL twice since July 28 because of his hamstring.  Hopefully, he will stay healthy for the rest of the season. The young third baseman will have to earn his sport back.  Eduardo Nunez has been playing pretty well and if Devers struggles, Nunez will have the starting spot.

At this time, there seem to be no more moves being made.  With Phillips and Devers now on the roster, the Red Sox have a full 40-man roster.
