For the first time since 2004, the Red Sox and Yankees will be facing off in the postseason.

After collecting my thoughts yesterday, I figured it was time for me to write a piece about this upcoming Red Sox/Yanks series.  I have no idea how long this will be, but I am just going to give you all my thoughts.

I want to start by saying that I am nervous.  I am not going to sit here and lie to you and say that I’m not worried about this series.  I’m beyond nervous.  I mean, it’s the playoffs – literally anything can happen.  This Yankees team is good.  But, so are the Red Sox.  This will be a pretty good series whether you want to admit that or not.

The Yankees have been on a bit of a roll lately and they are coming off a really good game against the Athletics in the AL Wild Card game.  Their offense was clicking on Wednesday night and Luis Severino looked really good on the mound.  I am hoping the Red Sox pitching staff can limit the damage this series.

The Red Sox are going to have to play really good baseball if they want to win this series.  There are a few things that they need to make happen over the next week.  If they can do these things, I think they will be in pretty good shape.

My keys to win the series:

  • Win at home

This is the most important key for me in the postseason.  The Red Sox have something they need to use to their advantage.  All through the playoffs, they will have the home-field advantage.  This is HUGE.  Especially when your home stadium is Fenway Park.  The Red Sox need to make sure they take care of business at home.

  • Score early in games

We have seen the importance of scoring runs early in games the past few postseasons.  The Red Sox need to come out and get going early.  The earlier you score runs in games, the better.

  • Keep Chris Sale healthy

If Chris Sale is healthy, the Red Sox are in good shape.  If he isn’t, it doesn’t look too good for Boston.  When Chris Sale is on, he is one of the most dominant pitchers in the game.  The Red Sox need that Chris Sale all through October if they want to win.

  • Bullpen has to be solid

A major topic that has been discussed the whole season is the state of the Red Sox bullpen.  There is no hiding that this is the one major flaw on this Red Sox team.  In the postseason, your bullpen arms can’t have any hiccups.  The Red Sox bullpen has to be sharp in order for the team to win.  They just need to forget what has happened during the regular season and just go out there and pitch like they are capable of.

Those are my keys to the series.  If we are being honest, those are the keys to the entire postseason if the Red Sox can make it past this round.  Like I said earlier, the Red Sox are going to have to play good baseball if they want to advance.  There is no question that this is going to be a fun series and I am ready for it.  I hope this team can pull this out and have a great October.

First pitch is at 7:32 tonight.  I want nothing more than to go up 1-0 in the ALDS and then win two more games.  The Red Sox are for sure going to stress me out this next week, but I am ready.  Let’s do this.
