A reunion with Craig Kimbrel seems unlikely

After last night’s news, it seems even more likely that the Red Sox will not be bringing back Kimbrel.

One of the biggest questions for the Red Sox this off-season is if the team will retain Craig Kimbrel, or let him walk.  We haven’t heard too much on the topic, but Dave Dombrowski has hinted at going in a different direction and promoting someone within to fill the closer role.  Well, Dombrowski cleared things up on Monday and I would now say there is a 99% chance that Kimbrel will sign with another team.

I completely agree with Dombrowski here and I would not go and sign Kimbrel to the big contract that he is wanting.  The Red Sox do have a very high payroll and want to be smart with their money considering the amount of players on their current roster that will be entering free agency soon.  The smartest move Dombrowski can make is to let Kimbrel walk and promote within or go find a reliever that is on the market.

If the team wants to promote within, they have a couple of options.  Matt Barnes and Ryan Brasier could both be guys that could fill that role.  Another option is re-signing Joe Kelly, who would be significantly cheaper than Kimbrel.  The Red Sox are also reportedly intersted in Adam Ottavino and David Robertson.  I would prefer any of these options over Kimbrel.

I would say that we will find more out later this week on what the Red Sox plan to do.  Make sure to stay tuned to our site and we will keep you updated!
