The Red Sox had a day off to collect themselves after a crushing two game sweep in NY, and tonight start a three game set vs the 1st place Rays. The past couple days have been a flurry of moves — Pedroia on IL, Eduardo Nunez on IL, Tzu-Wei Lin to active roster, Erasmo Ramirez getting DFA’d…. and the headliner move, top position prospect Michael Chavis getting promoted to the majors.
The Sox & Cora were dancing around the subject of Chavis getting a call. But Nunez needing some time off with his back, that nudged the issue into actually happening. Unlike the still peculiar Swihart DFA, Chavis getting a call to the majors is a nice shot in the arm for a team that is struggling to score runs (20th overall). He is two years removed from having a monster season in 2017 (34 HRs, 91 RBIs), before getting popped with an 80 game suspension for PEDS.
Eduardo Rodriguez takes the mound for the Sox, coming off of his best start in quite some time. Rodriguez, getting the first win of seasons for a Sox starter, was electric against the Orioles. In 6.2 innings he gave up two runs off of just three hits, walking none while striking out eight batters. The two runs didn’t come until the very end when he was trying to close out his start with seven shutout innings.
Rodriguez faced the Rays once last season, and it was an early exit to the showers.
3.2 innings, 5 Hits, 3 Runs, 1 HR, 7 Ks, 2 Walks
Ryne Stanek takes the ball for the Rays. He embodies the role of the opener to a “T”. Since last season he has compiled 33 starts. But since opening day 2018, he has pitched a grand total of 75.2 innings. But he’s done it in an effective manner, posting ERAs of 2.98 last season and currently 1.93. He has been a solid opener for Cash to have start games off, as evidenced by minuscule opponent batting avg’s of .191 in 2018 and .176 thus far.
Hopefully not a precursor for the Sox offense that has struggled to get it going against starting pitchers.
