The Red Sox DH was forced to exit the series finale in Kansas City.
J.D. Martinez was removed from the series finale against the Kansas City Royals. The Red Sox are calling it “back spasms.”

As you may recall, this isn’t a new injury for the Red Sox DH which should raise some minor red flags. It’s the third instance in which Martinez’ back has flared up this season, but none of which have involved a trip to the injured list. It’s expected that Alex Cora will address the media in his postgame press conference, but the severity of the injury won’t be known until that point.
While it may be possible that Cora was being proactive in the third game of a rather meaningless series against the Royals, it doesn’t sound great. The Red Sox have an important four game set against the Tampa Bay Rays and will certainly require the services of their vaunted designated hitter in order to be at their best.
