It looked like another dreary day where Sale wouldn’t get any run support. Then in the 6th inning had the Sox getting some timely hits (and help from Orioles defense), putting up a three spot and never trailed afterward. Leading the charge was JD Martinez who homered (4 HRs in last 3 games), and Brock Holt who went 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base.
Chris Sale deservedly got some runs before his exit after the laborious 6th inning was complete. He gave up 2 ER while walking one batter…. and shocker, striking out 10 batters. His record is 3-7 now, and he’ll look to continue the march to .500 winning record as his next start will be opposing the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.
Brian Johnson takes the mound for the Red Sox. Making his return to the staff, the plan is for Johnson to bring a more steady presence in the 5th starter’s spot. Eovaldi was expected back around now. But there have been setbacks. His return is up in the air, as of right now. Last year in 38 games (13 starts), Johnson had a 4-5 record to go with a 4.17 ERA. The main troubling stat in the 2018 season was the HR ball, he gave up 16 of them across 99.1 innings. There was six starts that he pitched five or more innings. He went 4-1, taking one No-Decision.
John Means takes the ball for the Orioles. A potential trade candidate, Means has had a solid year posting a 2.60 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and opposing .220 avg. A rare bright spot this season for the Orioles fanbase to enjoy watching. There has been just two starts this seaosn where he has allowed more than three runs. One of them saw him give up five runs…. but only one run was earned (Orioles defense strikes again). Means has faced the Sox twice this season, giving up a total of 2 ER in 12 innings.
