It had been looking like this would be the outcome for Thornburg.

Not really any shocking news here from WEEI’s Rob Bradford. Bradford reports that Thornburg has turned down an assignment to the minors, which will most likely lead to him being released.

Yesterday, it was reported that the Red Sox had recalled reliever Tyler Thornburg from his rehab assignment. This meant that the Red Sox had two days to decide whether to keep the righty on the MLB roster or part ways.

Thornburg has been a huge disappointment, to say the least. Back in 2016, the reliever was acquired in a trade that will haunt Red Sox fans forever. The Red Sox traded Travis Shaw, Mauricio Dubon, Josh Pennington, and Yeison Coca for Thornburg. It pains me to type that, but it finally looks like the Thornburg era is over in Boston.
