Forbes sports writer, Phil Rogers, reported late last night that the Red Sox were among teams interested in Jose Abreu. Rogers sent out a tweet stating that the Red Sox were “among teams monitoring Abreu’s availability.”

The Red Sox have been short at first base the past month. Mitch Moreland suffered a right quad strain and Steve Pearce has been battling back and knee issues. Both first basemen have been on the IL since the beginning of June. However, Moreland’s outlook is a little more positive than Pearce’s. Manager Alex Cora said yesterday that Moreland is close to being ready to be activated while Pearce is nowhere close.

It’s pretty clear the Red Sox could use another power hitter in the lineup as they will attempt to make a push for the playoffs this half of the season. I just don’t know if there would be room for Abreu. It would be tricky for Alex Cora to balance playing time between the guys at first base with Abreu on the roster.
