7/28 Pitchers Vs Hitters Matchups: Sox Going for Sweep of Yankees

The Red Sox needed a hot run to prove that they were buyers, NOT sellers. After going a middling, 4-3 against the dregs Blue Jays & Orioles, the team has gone 5-1 against the Rays & Yankees. Because baseball. The offense is on a tear, as they batter a worn out Yankees pitching staff. Per 2019 standards, the Yankees announced today that C.C. would be going on the 10 Day IL. Curious to see them replace him with a position player (Tyler Wade). Would think the corresponding move would be to call up a fresh arm.

Chris Sale takes the mound for the Red Sox. It has been “Sale Day” the last couple starts, as he has himself a two game winning streak.

(2-0, 1.50 ERA)

12 innings, 6 Hits, 2 Runs, 1 HR, 22 Ks, 5 Walks

While they have already won the series… it would be a big signature message for Sale to quiet the Yankees bats, to lead the team to a rather unexpected four game sweep of NY. We are approaching August and it’s tight race to grab one of the Wild Card spots. Yankees fans contend that the Yankees “own” Sale because of his 6-6 record against the pinstripes. This despite the fact that he holds an ERA of 2.10 and 146 Ks in 111.2 innings. That doesn’t sound like he has been “owned”. Maybe by his run support he has.

Domingo German takes the ball for the Yankees, looking to stop their streak of 7+ Runs allowed in 7 straight games. The 26 yr old righty is 12-2 with a 4.03 ERA, and is coming off of his worst start of the season. He lasted just 3.2 innings in Minnesota, giving up 8 ER. This was just his second start of the season of giving up more than four runs (7 ER vs Royals in 5 innings, 4 HRs).

He consistently pounds the strike zone, so the offense might not want to wait him out. Only two times this season, German has walked more than two batters in a game. And the last time that took place, was on May 5th facing the Twins. While him attacking the zone limits the walks, it also leaves him suspect to the HR ball. So far in 21.2 innings pitched in July, six balls have left the park with him on the mound.
