The calendar flips over to August, with the Sox team reeling from a three game losing streak & still more problems to sort through. While Porcello went 5.2 innings (good for ’19 Sox standards), he gave up 3 HRs and 6 Runs. His ERA has ballooned up to 5.74. A Sox starter hasn’t been this bad since John Lackey in 2011 (6.41 ERA). And he had a valid excuse, missing the 2012 season due to Tommy John surgery. Porcello could use a mental break IL trip, but the route the Sox are taking is to start him every fifth day.
Andrew Cashner takes the mound for the Red Sox, with his team leaning on him to play the role of “stopper”. He is coming off of his best start in a Red Sox uniform, going 6.2 innings & allowing just three runs against the Yankees. Those three runs didn’t come until the 6th and 7th innings. Anything close to a start like that, would be just what this team needs. Win the end cap of this series, before facing the Yankees for four games (two on Saturday).
Brendan McKay takes the ball for the Rays. The 23 yr old left handed rookie is making the fifth start of his young career. His first three starts saw him allow just 3 ER in 16 innings pitched (1.69 ERA). But McKay is coming off of his first speed bump, getting roughed up for 6 Runs (5 ER) in 3.1 innings. The team that got to him was the Chicago White Sox, who are 28th in Runs scored.
