Monday afternoon, the Indians and Red Sox announced a trade in which the Red Sox shipped backup catcher Sandy Leon to the Indians in exchange for a minor league right-handed pitcher in Adenys Bautista.
The move comes hours before the deadline for the Red Sox to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players. I didn’t really expect Leon to be on the 2020 Red Sox roster. Leon is projected to make close to $3 million in arbitration and with the team attempting to cut payroll, that’s too much for an underperforming backup catcher.
The Red Sox would have most likely released Sandy if they hadn’t found a trade partner. The Indians were willing to deal a minor league arm for him which is better than nothing. Adenys Bautista has spent his career in rookie ball. According to MLB Trade Rumors, Bautista has pitched 43.2 total innings with a 5.98 ERA over that span.
