The Boston Red Sox have made their first move of 2020, signing catcher Kevin Plawecki to backup Christian Vazquez this season. The one year deal is reportedly worth $900,000.
What many are pointing out about the deal is the irony of it. Sandy Leon was dealt to the Indians at the beginning of the offseason. Plawecki had been the Indians’ backup catcher during the 2019 season, but was non-tendered following the acquisition of Leon. Now, the Red Sox have signed Plawecki.
You’re basically getting another, maybe slightly better, Sandy Leon in Plawecki. During the 2019 season, Plawecki hit .222 / .287 / .342 with a -0.1 WAR. The move is pretty underwhelming, but hey, the Red Sox have a backup catcher!
